Can you charter a car in Tibet? Private tours with car, driver and guide start from USD 499 per person; group tours from USD 950 for 8 days. How they compare.
Quick answer: Foreign visitors cannot rent a car or self-drive in Tibet, so "chartering a car" really means booking a private tour: a vehicle with driver, a licensed guide and your permits, all on one price. Our 4-day private Lhasa tour starts from USD 499 per person for two travellers, and a 4-day private trip to Everest Base Camp from USD 750. Joining a small group is the cheaper route for one or two people: 8-day Everest group tours start from USD 950 and 14-day Mount Kailash journeys from USD 1,850. The live price table below is pulled straight from our tour catalogue.
When people ask what it costs to "hire a car" in Tibet, they are usually comparing two ways of seeing the same places: a vehicle and guide just for their own party, or a seat on a fixed-date small-group departure. Both include the Tibet Travel Permit, a licensed guide, transport, hotels and entrance fees. The difference is who you share those fixed costs with, and how much control you have over the plan.
Can You Rent a Car or Hire Just a Driver?
No. Foreign travellers are required to be on an organized itinerary run by a licensed Tibet agency, accompanied by a licensed guide, with the vehicle and driver arranged by that agency. There is no self-drive option and no "driver only" option for foreign passport holders, and outside Lhasa the route is checked against your permit at police checkpoints. Offers that promise a cheap car without a guide or permit are not legitimate and can end with you turned back on the road.
What you can choose is whether that vehicle, driver and guide are reserved for your party alone (a private tour) or shared with other travellers on a fixed departure (a small-group tour).
What a Private Tour Costs
A private tour bundles a vehicle with driver, a guide, permits, hotels, entrance fees and breakfasts. Because the vehicle and guide cost roughly the same whether they carry one guest or four, the per-person price falls quickly as your party grows.
| Private trip | From (per person, 2 travellers) | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Lhasa city tour: Potala Palace, Jokhang, Sera, Drepung | USD 499 | 4 days |
| Lhasa to Everest Base Camp | USD 750 | 4 days |
| Longer custom routes (Namtso, Nyingchi, Kailash) | Quoted to your plan | 6 to 16 days |
For two travellers, a 4-day private Lhasa trip works out to around USD 1,000 in total, hotels included. Three or four travellers sharing one vehicle and guide pay noticeably less each. Larger families or friend groups move to a minivan, which keeps the per-person cost falling.
Chartering a car for a Lhasa or Potala Palace tour
Inside Lhasa you do not need a vehicle for every sight: the Jokhang and Barkhor are on foot, and the Potala Palace is a short ride from most hotels. What a "Lhasa car charter" really buys is the guide (who must accompany you into the major monasteries), transfers from Lhasa Gonggar Airport or the railway station, and day trips to Sera, Drepung or Ganden. The Potala Palace itself needs a timed ticket booked in advance against your passport, with daily quotas in summer; your agency books it for you. The entrance fee (about RMB 200 from May to October and RMB 100 in winter) is included in every Lhasa tour we sell.
Chartering a car for Mount Kailash (Gang Rinpoche)

A private Kailash trip is the most expensive charter in Tibet because the vehicle and guide are committed for two weeks over very long distances, and the far-west permits add paperwork. For one or two travellers, our 14-day Ngari, Mount Kailash & Guge group tour (from USD 1,850) or the 15-day Kailash & Manasarovar tour is far better value. A private Kailash departure starts to make financial sense from about four travellers. The far west only runs from late spring to mid-autumn; see the Mount Kailash pilgrimage guide.
What Joining a Group Tour Costs
On a small-group tour you take a seat on a fixed departure date and split the vehicle, guide and permit costs with the other guests. Most of our departures run from a single traveller, with groups capped at around a dozen people per vehicle.
| Group trip | From (per person, twin-share) |
|---|---|
| 8-Day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp | USD 950 |
| 8-Day Everest Base Camp & Namtso | USD 990 |
| 10-Day Nyingchi, Everest & Namtso | USD 1,290 |
| 14-Day Ngari, Mount Kailash & Guge | USD 1,850 |
Prices rise from winter to the May to October peak and again over China's October Golden Week; the table below shows both ends. Solo travellers who want their own room pay a single supplement. Check open dates on the departures calendar.
Private or Group: Which Is Cheaper for You?
- Solo or two travellers: a group tour is almost always cheaper, often by a wide margin on longer routes.
- Three or four travellers: private and group prices start to converge, and a private tour gives you your own pace, photo stops and hotel choice.
- Five or more: a private tour can cost the same as, or less than, booking five group seats, with a fully custom route.
- Fixed dates you cannot move: private tours run on any date; group tours only on scheduled departures.
The Sichuan-Tibet Highway
Overland travel into Tibet from Sichuan is possible for foreign travellers only on organized, permitted departures, typically about 10 days from Chengdu to Lhasa (weekly in the April to October season) or a longer 15-day version. Expect roughly USD 2,000 to 2,500 per person for the 10-day trip depending on season. It is a long, rough, high road, so it suits travellers who are comfortable with altitude and long driving days. Ask us for the current schedule; it is not something you can arrange independently. For the more common routes in, see how to get to Tibet.
What Is Not Included Either Way
Whichever option you choose, budget separately for flights or trains to Lhasa, your China visa, travel insurance that covers altitude, most lunches and dinners, and tips for your guide and driver (see our Tibet tipping guide). For a full day-by-day budget, read how much a Tibet tour costs.
