Best Time to Visit Tibet: A Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

April to October is the sweet spot for Tibet, but every month has a different character. Here is an honest month-by-month breakdown of weather, crowds, and what to expect, plus the one window you may not be able to travel at all.

Tibet rewards travelers who time their trip well. At an average elevation above 4,000 metres, the plateau has a thin, dry atmosphere that swings from brilliant sunshine to fast-moving weather, and the difference between a great month and a difficult one is real. This guide walks through the year month by month so you can match your expectations to the season.

One point shapes everything below: as a foreign visitor you cannot travel independently in Tibet. You must join a licensed organized tour, hold a Tibet Travel Permit that we arrange for you, and travel with a guide. That matters for timing because permits are not issued during certain closed periods, and they take time to process. Plan early.

The Short Answer

For most travelers, late April through October is the best window. Within that, early May, late September, and October tend to offer the finest combination of clear skies, mild days, and mountain visibility. If your heart is set on seeing Everest Base Camp, those same shoulder months give you the best odds of a cloud-free summit view.

Month-by-Month at a Glance

The table below summarizes Lhasa (3,656m) as a baseline. Remember that higher destinations such as Everest and Namtso run noticeably colder, and nights everywhere drop sharply once the sun goes down.

Month Lhasa daytime feel Rain Crowds Notes
January Cold, very dry, sunny Minimal Very low Quiet, deep discounts; high passes can be snowy
February Cold, dry Minimal Low / closure risk* Tibet may close to foreign tourists late in the month
March Chilly, clearing Low Closure risk* Often affected by the late-winter closure; status varies by year
April Mild, pleasant Low Rising One of the best months once the season is open
May Warm days, cool nights Low Busy Excellent visibility; superb for Everest
June Warm Increasing late Busy Rains begin toward month's end
July Warm Frequent Peak Green landscapes; afternoon showers common
August Warm Highest Peak Wettest month; book ahead, expect some cloud
September Warm, drying out Easing Busy Lush and clear; a top pick
October Mild, very clear Low Moderate Clearest skies and best mountain views
November Cool to cold Minimal Low Crisp and quiet; good value
December Cold, dry, sunny Minimal Very low Blue skies, few travelers, lowest prices

Spring (April to May)

Spring is when the plateau wakes up. April brings mild, settled weather and far fewer crowds than summer, while May is warm by day with reliably clear skies. This is one of the strongest windows for an Everest Base Camp tour because the monsoon has not yet arrived and the world's highest peak is frequently visible. Nights are still cold, especially at altitude, so layers remain essential.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the busiest season, and for good reason: daytime temperatures in Lhasa are comfortable, the valleys turn green, and the long days suit a packed itinerary. The trade-off is the rainy season, which builds through June and peaks in August, the wettest month on the plateau. Rain in Tibet usually falls as short afternoon or overnight showers rather than all-day downpours, so sightseeing is rarely washed out, but distant mountain views can be hazier and a flexible attitude helps. If you travel in summer, book accommodation and permits well in advance.

Autumn (September to October)

Many seasoned Tibet travelers consider autumn the finest time of all. The rains taper off through September, leaving clean air, golden barley fields, and excellent visibility. October, in particular, delivers the clearest skies of the year, with long stretches of sunshine and superb sightlines to snow-capped ranges. Temperatures are mild by day and cold at night. If you want one month that balances good weather, manageable crowds, and reliable mountain views, October is hard to beat.

Winter (November to February)

Winter is underrated. Skies are often a deep, cloudless blue, the major sights are quiet, and prices for tours, flights, and hotels drop substantially. Lhasa itself is sunny and manageable; the city sits lower than most people assume and daytime sun takes the edge off. The downsides are genuinely cold nights, the risk of snow closing high passes, and reduced access to the most remote, high-elevation destinations. For a culture-focused trip centered on Lhasa and nearby monasteries, winter can be a wonderful and affordable choice. Our 4-day Lhasa Essential tour works well in this season.

The Closure You Must Plan Around

Tibet occasionally closes to foreign tourists for a short period, most commonly from late February into March, sometimes extending toward early April. During such a window no Tibet Travel Permits are issued. The exact timing changes from year to year and is often announced with little advance notice, so if your travel falls anywhere near this period, build in flexibility and confirm current permit availability before booking flights. You can always contact us for the latest status.

How to Choose Your Month

  1. You want the clearest mountain views: aim for October, then late April to May.
  2. You want greenery and long days, and don't mind some rain: July or August.
  3. You want quiet sights and the best prices: November or December.
  4. You want the safest bet overall: late September into October.

A Note on Altitude and Timing

No month removes the need to acclimatize. Whenever you come, plan a gentle first day or two in Lhasa before heading higher. Season affects comfort and views; it does not change the fundamentals of high-altitude travel. For more on staying well, see our guides on altitude sickness and what to pack.

Once you have a target month, the next step is locking in permits and transport early, since the best seasons book out. Browse our Tibet tours or reach out and we will help you match the right itinerary to the right time of year.

October is the most reliable choice. It offers the clearest skies of the year, mild daytime temperatures, excellent mountain visibility, and more manageable crowds than the summer peak. Late April through May is a close second, especially for Everest views.
