4-Day Private Lhasa City Tour
Lhasa · Drepung Monastery · Sera Monastery · Potala Palace · Jokhang Temple · Barkhor Street
The Route
Four days, one city, no rushing the altitude
Most first-time visitors try to bolt Lhasa onto a longer overland route and end up seeing Lhasa through a car window on the way somewhere else. This private four-day trip does the opposite: it stays put at 3,650m and gives the city the time it deserves — which is also, not coincidentally, the sensible way to acclimatise.
Day one is deliberately empty. Day two goes to the monasteries — Drepung, which once housed over ten thousand monks, and Sera, where the afternoon debating courtyard is still one of the loudest, most physical pieces of scholarship you will ever watch. Day three is the old city: the Potala in the morning, the Jokhang and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit in the afternoon, and a long sit in a Tibetan sweet-tea house where your guide can answer the questions the guidebooks never quite do.
It runs privately — your own guide, your own vehicle, your own departure date — so the order can shift around Potala Palace ticket slots, which are issued for a fixed hour and cannot be moved. Your Tibet Travel Permit is arranged as part of the booking; see the permit guide for what we need from you and when.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive in Lhasa
Your Tibetan guide meets your flight or train with a white khata and drives you into the city. Check in, then do very little: the first day at 3,650m is for drinking water, walking slowly and letting your body catch up. Your guide runs through the itinerary, the altitude signs worth watching for, and where to find them if you need anything overnight.

Overnight: Lhasa
Drepung Monastery and the Sera debates
A full day among monks. Drepung in the morning — the largest monastery in Tibet, and in its day a small city of more than ten thousand — where the Coqen Hall gives your guide the scale to explain how Tibetan Buddhism actually orders the world. You'll look into Loseling College and the monks' quarters, which is a far plainer and more interesting sight than the gilded halls. In the afternoon, Sera, for the debating courtyard: clapped hands, stamped feet, and two hours of formal argument that runs Monday to Saturday from about three o'clock.

Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor
The Potala first, at whatever hour your ticket is issued for — up through the white and red palaces to the burial stupas of the Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of Songtsen Gampo, then out to a view over the whole old town. Afterwards, down to Longwangtan Park at the foot of the hill, where Lhasa families picnic and play and the palace looks entirely different from below. In the afternoon the Jokhang, the holiest temple in Tibet and the reason the city exists, and a kora of the Barkhor with the pilgrims. The day finishes in a busy indoor tea house over sweet tea.

Frequently Asked Questions
For the city itself, yes — three full days covers the Potala, the Jokhang, the Barkhor and the two great monasteries without hurrying. What four days does not leave room for is a side trip to Yamdrok Lake or Namtso; if you want one of those, take the 8-day Everest itinerary or ask us to add a day.
