Tibet Tours from Chengdu: Flights, Trains & Packages (2026)

Chengdu is the most popular gateway to Tibet, with more daily nonstop flights to Lhasa than any other city and a direct scenic train on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, is the single busiest gateway to Tibet for international travelers. It has the most frequent flights to Lhasa of any city in China, an established direct train, and a deep bench of agencies that handle the Tibet Travel Permit. If you are flying into China specifically for Tibet, routing through Chengdu is usually the simplest choice.

How to Get to Tibet from Chengdu

The fastest option is the nonstop flight from Chengdu to Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA), which takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. This is the densest air route to Tibet anywhere — there are around a dozen departures most days, operated by Air China, Sichuan Airlines, Tibet Airlines, Chengdu Airlines and others. Flights leave from both Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) and Chengdu Tianfu (TFU), so check which airport your ticket uses.

If you would rather acclimatize gradually and see the plateau from ground level, there is also a direct train, Z322, which runs onto the Qinghai–Tibet Railway and climbs over the Tanggula Pass — the highest railway point in the world.

Route Mode Typical duration Notes
Chengdu → Lhasa Flight (nonstop) ~2h15 ~10–12 daily; fastest option
Chengdu → Lhasa Train Z322 (every other day) ~34–35h Sleeper berths; oxygen-supplied carriages
Chengdu → Xining → Lhasa Train (connect) varies Board the scenic plateau section at Xining

Many travelers fly one direction and take the train the other. For a deeper comparison, see our how to get to Tibet and Tibet train guide.

Tibet Travel Permit from Chengdu

Foreign passport holders cannot travel to Tibet independently. You need a Tibet Travel Permit, and the permit is only issued to travelers on an organized, guided tour. You do not apply yourself — your tour operator applies on your behalf.

The practical steps are simple. Once you book, send us clear scans of your passport and your Chinese visa. We submit the application and arrange a licensed Tibetan guide and vehicle for your whole trip. The original permit is then delivered to you, usually at your Chengdu hotel, before departure. Because processing takes time, send your documents roughly 15–20 days before your Tibet entry date. You will need the physical permit to board both flights and trains to Lhasa, so do not cut the timing close. Full details are on our Tibet Travel Permit page.

Recommended Tibet Tours from Chengdu

Because the flight is short, Chengdu suits both quick first visits and longer expeditions. If you have only a few days, the Lhasa Essential Tour (4 days) covers the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the old city at a sensible pace for altitude. With a week, the central Tibet loop adds Gyantse and Shigatse. With more time and an adventurous streak, fly in and head for Everest. Browse the full range on our Tibet tours page.

Practical Tips

  • Altitude first. Lhasa sits at about 3,650 m. Plan a slow first day, drink plenty of water, and skip alcohol on arrival.
  • Book early in peak season. May, June, September and October fill up fast, both for flights and permits.
  • Carry the original permit. A scan or photo is not accepted at airport or station checkpoints.
  • Use the train to acclimatize. The Chengdu or Xining train gains altitude gradually, which some travelers find easier than flying straight to 3,650 m.
  • Pack layers. Plateau weather swings sharply between sun and shade, day and night, even in summer.
