Namtso Lake

Overview

Namtso, meaning "Heavenly Lake" in Tibetan, sits at about 4,718 metres (15,479 ft) and is one of the highest large lakes in the world. It is among the most sacred lakes in Tibetan Buddhism, ringed by snow-capped peaks of the Nyenchen Tanglha range. The colour of the water — an intense, clear blue under a big plateau sky — is what stays with most visitors.

Namtso is a high-altitude day trip or overnight from Lhasa. Because the lake itself sits well above Lhasa, it is best visited after you have acclimatized. An overnight stay rewards you with sunrise and night skies that are hard to match anywhere, though the lakeside lodging is basic.

• Stargazing — At this altitude, far from any city, the night sky over Namtso can be spectacularly clear.
• Lakeshore walks — Easy strolls along the shore among prayer flags and mani stones, taking in the scale of the place. The grasslands near the shore are grazed by yaks and visited by migratory birds in the warmer months.
• Meditation caves — Around Tashi Dor are small caves long used by hermits and pilgrims, a reminder that the lake is a place of devotion as much as a scenic stop.

Best Time to Visit

May to September is the practical season, when the road over the Nagenla Pass is reliably open and the lakeside guesthouses operate. Summer brings the warmest, most accessible conditions and green pastures on the way. In winter, the lake freezes over and snow can close the high pass, so access is often not possible from around December into spring. Even in summer, nights at the lake are cold and the wind can be sharp — pack warm layers regardless of when you go, and be prepared for a real drop in temperature after sunset.

How to Get There

Namtso lies about 250 km northwest of Lhasa, roughly a four-to-five-hour drive each way, crossing the high Nagenla Pass. It is visited as a long day trip or, better, as an overnight, always by road on a guided tour with permits arranged by your agency.
