Yamdrok Lake

One of Tibet's three great sacred lakes, Yamdrok's vivid turquoise water spreads beneath the Kamba La pass, an easy and stunning excursion from Lhasa.

Yamdrok Lake — 1

Overview

Yamdrok Lake (Yamdrok Tso), at about 4,441 metres (14,570 ft), is one of the three great sacred lakes of Tibet, alongside Namtso and Manasarovar. It is famous above all for its colour: a vivid turquoise that shifts with the light, fanning out in long arms between bare mountains. Its name in Tibetan means "turquoise lake," and seen from the pass above it is one of the most photographed sights in Tibet.

Yamdrok is the easiest of the major lakes to reach from Lhasa, which makes it a popular day trip and a classic first stop on the southern route west. Unlike remote Namtso, you can experience Yamdrok comfortably within a day, yet it loses none of its drama.

Top Things to See & Do

  • Kamba La pass viewpoint — The classic vantage point, on the pass above the lake (around 4,700–4,800 m). From here the lake's branching, turquoise expanse opens up below — the photo everyone comes for, often with Mount Nojin Kangsang on the horizon.
  • The lakeshore — Drive down to the water's edge to appreciate the colour up close and walk a stretch of shore among prayer flags.
  • Karola Glacier — Continuing toward Gyantse, the road passes close to this roadside glacier, an easy and dramatic add-on on the same route.
  • Local viewpoints and villages — Small settlements and pastures around the lake give a glimpse of plateau farming and herding life, and several pull-offs along the road offer different angles on the water.
  • Photography stops — Beyond the main pass, the lake's long, branching shape means new compositions keep appearing as you drive along its edge, making it one of the most rewarding stretches of road in central Tibet for photographers.

Best Time to Visit

April to October gives the best chance of seeing the turquoise water at its most vivid under clear skies, with late spring and early autumn especially reliable. Summer is warm and the surrounding hills greener, with occasional afternoon rain. In winter the lake can partially freeze and the colour is muted, though the pass is usually still drivable. Clear, sunny days bring out the colour best, so a little weather luck helps — on an overcast day the famous turquoise can look surprisingly grey.

How to Get There

Yamdrok lies a little over 100 km southwest of Lhasa, reached by crossing the Kamba La pass — typically two to three hours' drive to the viewpoint. It is visited either as a dedicated day trip from Lhasa or, more often, as the first major stop on the southern road toward Gyantse and Shigatse. You travel by road on a guided tour with permits arranged in advance. To include it, see the Central Tibet Lhasa–Shigatse Tour or contact us.

Where It Fits in a Tibet Trip

Yamdrok is one of the most rewarding short excursions in Tibet and slots into almost any itinerary based in Lhasa. Most travellers see it on the way west, as the opening highlight of the southern route to Gyantse, Shigatse, and on toward Everest Base Camp. At 4,441 m it sits above Lhasa, so it works best once you have had a day or two to acclimatize, and it makes an excellent introduction to the high plateau lakes.
