How to Get to Tibet from Malaysia

From Kuala Lumpur you fly to a mainland Chinese city and then connect to a flight into Lhasa Gonggar Airport (LXA). Chengdu is the most convenient gateway: there are several daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu, and Chengdu in turn has the most onward flights to Lhasa, at around two and a quarter hours. Chongqing and Guangzhou are useful alternatives depending on schedules.

Foreign travelers need a Chinese tourist visa first, and then a Tibet Travel Permit together with an organized, guided tour — independent travel in Tibet is not permitted. • Book the visa first. Your Tibet Travel Permit depends on your China tourist visa, so arrange the visa before we apply.
• Send scans early. Provide passport and visa scans at least 15–20 days before departure.
• Favor Chengdu. With frequent flights from KL and the most onward Lhasa service, it is usually the simplest gateway.
• Take altitude seriously. Lhasa is around 3,650 m. Rest on arrival, hydrate well, and avoid alcohol the first day or two.
