Tibet Tours from Xi'an: Flights, Trains & Packages (2026)

Xi'an pairs naturally with Tibet on a Silk Road itinerary, offering nonstop flights to Lhasa and the direct train Z165 on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway.

Xi'an, home of the Terracotta Army and the eastern anchor of the ancient Silk Road, is a popular stop to combine with Tibet. It has nonstop flights to Lhasa and a direct train, so you can pick speed or scenery. As with every gateway, your permit and guided tour are organized before you travel.

How to Get to Tibet from Xi'an

The quickest way is the nonstop flight from Xi'an Xianyang Airport (XIY) to Lhasa Gonggar (LXA), which takes roughly 3 hours 20 minutes. China Eastern, Sichuan Airlines and Tibet Airlines fly the route, though frequency is lower than from Chengdu, so book ahead in the busy months.

There is also a direct train, Z165, which runs onto the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. It is a long sleeper journey but a scenic one, and the gradual climb helps some travelers adjust to the altitude.

Route Mode Typical duration Notes
Xi'an → Lhasa Flight (nonstop) ~3h20 Fewer daily flights than Chengdu
Xi'an → Lhasa Train Z165 (direct) ~30h Sleeper berths; oxygen-supplied section
Xi'an → Xining → Lhasa Train (connect) varies Short hop to Xining, then the scenic train

Xining, the start of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, is only a couple of hours from Xi'an by high-speed rail, so some travelers ride to Xining and board the plateau train there. See how to get to Tibet and the Tibet train guide for details.

Tibet Travel Permit from Xi'an

Independent travel to Tibet is not allowed for foreign passport holders. You must be on an organized, guided tour to qualify for the Tibet Travel Permit, and the application is made by your operator, not by you.

Once you book, send clear scans of your passport and Chinese visa. We submit the permit application and arrange a licensed Tibetan guide and vehicle for the whole trip. The original permit is delivered to you before departure, usually at your Xi'an hotel, since you must present it to board the train or flight to Lhasa. Plan for about 15–20 days between sending documents and your entry date. Our Tibet Travel Permit page has the full process.

Recommended Tibet Tours from Xi'an

Xi'an travelers frequently fold Tibet into a longer cultural trip. The Lhasa Essential Tour (4 days) is ideal if you only have a short window after the Terracotta Army. With more time, the central Tibet loop through Gyantse and Shigatse rounds out the highlights, and the boldest visitors push on to Everest Base Camp. See all options on our Tibet tours page.

Practical Tips

  • Reserve flights early. Nonstop Xi'an–Lhasa seats are limited compared with Chengdu's frequent service.
  • Mind the altitude. Lhasa is around 3,650 m; rest on your first day and hydrate well.
  • Carry the physical permit. Scans are not accepted at airport or rail checkpoints.
  • Combine with the Silk Road. Xi'an, Xining and Tibet make a logical west-bound overland-and-rail route.
  • Layer up. Plateau temperatures vary widely between sun and shade and day and night.
