How to Get to Tibet from Xi'an

The quickest way is the nonstop flight from Xi'an Xianyang Airport (XIY) to Lhasa Gonggar (LXA), which takes roughly 3 hours 20 minutes. China Eastern, Sichuan Airlines and Tibet Airlines fly the route, though frequency is lower than from Chengdu, so book ahead in the busy months.

There is also a direct train, Z165, which runs onto the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. It is a long sleeper journey but a scenic one, and the gradual climb helps some travelers adjust to the altitude.

Tibet Travel Permit from Xi'an

Independent travel to Tibet is not allowed for foreign passport holders. You must be on an organized, guided tour to qualify for the Tibet Travel Permit, and the application is made by your operator, not by you.

Once you book, send clear scans of your passport and Chinese visa. We submit the permit application and arrange a licensed Tibetan guide and vehicle for the whole trip. The original permit is delivered to you before departure, usually at your Xi'an hotel, since you must present it to board the train or flight to Lhasa.
