Tibet Tours from Hong Kong: Flights, Trains & Packages (2026)
Hong Kong reaches Tibet by a one-stop flight through a mainland hub such as Chengdu, or by high-speed rail to a gateway city and onward, with the permit and guided tour arranged in advance.
Hong Kong is a major international gateway, and while there is no true nonstop flight to Lhasa, getting to Tibet is straightforward with one connection through a mainland hub. Travelers based here usually route through Chengdu or Chongqing, both of which have frequent onward flights to Lhasa. As always, your permit and guided tour are arranged before you set off.
How to Get to Tibet from Hong Kong
There is no scheduled nonstop service from Hong Kong to Lhasa, so you connect through a mainland city. A through-flight on Tibet Airlines runs a couple of times a week but stops in Chengdu, taking around 7.5 hours in total. The most efficient choice is usually to fly Hong Kong to Chengdu (about 2.5 hours, several times daily) and connect to one of Chengdu's frequent ~2-hour flights to Lhasa. Chongqing and Xining work as alternative hubs.
If you would like to include the railway, you can take high-speed rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon to a gateway such as Xi'an or Xining, then board the Qinghai–Tibet train. Boarding at Xining means you ride the scenic plateau section in about 21 hours.
| Route | Mode | Typical duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong → Chengdu → Lhasa | Flight (connect) | most of a day | Chengdu has the most onward flights |
| Hong Kong → Lhasa | Flight (via Chengdu, 1 stop) | ~7.5h | Tibet Airlines, a few times weekly |
| Hong Kong → Xining → Lhasa | High-speed rail + train | ~1.5 days | Catch the scenic 21h plateau train |

Tibet Travel Permit from Hong Kong
Foreign passport holders cannot travel to Tibet independently. You must be on an organized, guided tour to qualify for the Tibet Travel Permit, and your operator applies for it on your behalf. Note that travelers entering Tibet from within mainland China need a valid Chinese visa, so make sure your visa arrangements suit your routing.
Once you book, send clear scans of your passport and Chinese visa. We submit the permit application and arrange a licensed Tibetan guide and private vehicle for your trip. Because you must show the original permit to board your flight or train to Lhasa, we deliver it to you before departure — typically at your hub-city hotel. Allow about 15–20 days from sending documents to your entry date. See our Tibet Travel Permit page for full details.

Practical Tips
- Allow a comfortable connection. Build in buffer time at your mainland hub to avoid tight transfers.
- Check your Chinese visa. Entry from mainland China requires a valid Chinese visa; plan it around your route.
- Carry the original permit. Digital copies are not accepted at airport or rail checkpoints.
- Acclimatize on arrival. Lhasa is about 3,650 m; rest and hydrate on your first day.
- Consider rail for the scenery. High-speed rail to Xining plus the plateau train is a memorable alternative to flying.
